Index — 02 / Approach

A practice grounded in what you can change —
and gentle about what you can't.

Therapy here begins with a simple idea: focus on what's controllable, and let go — at least a little — of what isn't. From that quiet pivot, real change tends to follow.

Together we'll build skills you can actually carry into the rest of your week. Not affirmations. Tools.

  1. 01

    Listen first.

No script. We start with where you actually are — the loop, the worry, the relationship, the day.

  2. 02

    Name it clearly.

Words for the thing make it workable. We translate vague distress into something you can hold and respond to.

  3. 03

    Build small skills.

DBT and self-compassion give you concrete moves. You leave each session with something to try.

  4. 04

    Stay kind.

Progress is rarely linear. Self-criticism rarely helps. We practice meeting yourself the way a friend would.

Two evidence-based
paths, woven together.

Sessions move fluidly between modalities — whichever serves the week you're in.

Modality 01

Dialectical
Behavior Therapy.

A practical framework for big emotions, fraught relationships, and the patterns we'd rather not repeat. DBT teaches four skill sets you can actually use: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

  • Mindfulness — staying present without bracing
  • Distress tolerance — riding waves you can't fix
  • Emotion regulation — fewer hijacks, more choices
  • Interpersonal effectiveness — saying the thing, well

Modality 02

Self-Compassion
Therapy.

Most of us are remarkably hard on ourselves — and surprised when that doesn't make things better. Self-compassion practice is the slow, steady work of treating yourself the way you'd treat someone you love who happened to be in the same trouble.

  • Soften the inner critic without silencing it
  • Notice shared humanity in private struggle
  • Build a mindful, kind relationship to setbacks
  • Use kindness as a method, not a feeling

Hi, I'm Kevin.
I'll be the one across the screen.

I'm a licensed therapist in New York and Virginia, and the founder of Finding Forward. I work with adults who are tired of feeling stuck — in old patterns, in difficult relationships, in stories they've outgrown — and ready to try something quieter and more deliberate.

My sessions tend to be conversational, warm, and direct. I'll ask real questions, I won't pretend to have a script, and I'll bring tools when tools help.
